A Houston man is suing a drug company that sells an anti-impotence drug that has been on the market since it was approved last year.
He says that a doctor in Texas ordered him to have his penis removed in 2014, which would have placed him at risk for having erectile dysfunction if he didn’t have a prescription.
A man in San Antonio sued the drug company, claiming that it had failed to warn him about the risks of taking the drug, and that the doctor had not been properly warned about the drug’s side effects.
The lawsuit claims that the Texas Department of Public Health, which regulates drugs and medical devices, is not adequately warned about the drug’s risks.
The drug, which also includes Viagra and a number of other medications, is prescribed for male sexual dysfunction, a condition in which men have trouble getting and keeping an erection.
Sildenafil, sold under the brand name Viagra, is the active ingredient in the FDA-approved drug.
The lawsuit contends that the doctor had a duty to warn about the drug’s side effects and that he knew that he had to do it “to save himself some embarrassment.”
“I’m not saying that’s a good thing, but I do have a duty to provide a safe and effective solution,” says the plaintiff. “It has always been my job to be aware of the risks.”
The suit says that a doctor in Texas ordered him to have his penis removed.
“This was an extremely dangerous procedure and I’m a doctor, and that’s why I was so anxious to get a response from the doctor,” says the suit.
The suit also claims that the doctor had a duty to inform him of the risks associated with the drug, which included sexual dysfunction.
“There is a duty on my part to protect myself from any and all risks,” the suit says. “I think the doctor’s duty to advise me in this case is one of putting me at risk.”
The suit asks that if you don’t get your penis removed, your physician should be informed about the risks.

A Texas Department of Public Health spokeswoman says that the department’s responsibility is to provide safe and effective services, including counseling patients on the dangers of sexual dysfunction and promoting open and honest communication.
“We are committed to working closely with the public to better understand the potential benefits of this treatment and to help minimize its negative effects,” she says. “Any injury you may cause from this practice, we are pleased to have had access to this information and to provide appropriate advice and recommendations for patients and medical providers.”
“This is the latest in a string of recent cases involving the use of the Viagra and other drugs for treating erectile dysfunction,” she says. “While this case is being investigated by a Texas federal judge, we will continue to take appropriate steps to ensure that this drug is safe for patients.”
The lawsuit was originally filed in federal court in Houston by a man in San Antonio.
